The term Mummy Tummy has unfortunately been affectionately connected with moms everywhere who don’t walk away from pregnancy with a six-pack. Now this is not to get confused with the muffin top or “the shelf”; this is more specific to the pooch or ball that sticks out right around or under your belly button and just continues to get bigger throughout the day.
So what’s a mom to do? Sign up for the closest boot camp of course and “crunch” away and attempt other forms of useless and ineffective exercises until moms eventually just get “fed up” and begin to seek help? More often, this results in a trip to the doctor who will tell them to either “suck it up, you’ve had a baby” or “I know a great surgeon”. Are you kidding me? These are the options available? Well I am here to tell you absolutely not! Neither of them could be farther from the truth especially when the doctors don’t know how to treat it in the first place.
First things first; you are not alone. Mummy tummy is most commonly the result of a condition called Diastasis Recti (separation of the Rectus Abdominis) Your outer most abdominals are separated, your organs are exposed and the more you eat, these organs are pushed out – plain and simple. But can you get them back? Of course you can! But don’t get any fantasies that it’s easy. If your only alternative is to “suck it up” or have a $15,000 tummy tuck, then you must realize that a lot of work needed to do it naturally. But hey, I have never met a mom yet who wasn’t used to hard work. It’s just a matter of how hard you want it. Make sense?
So there you have it! But it’s not just exercise, it’s also a way of life. If you have a diastasis and it’s significant, there’s a good chance you have chronic back pain. You need to change the way you move and use your abdominals in every day life. Be mindful and use your head. Get yourself assessment by a trained professional who knows how to assess correctly and can treat it accordingly.
But if you don’t do anything at all, please stop the crunches, v-sits and all the other old school ways of creating a six-pack just to make your mummy tummy worse. If you don’t believe me, take a look down and you tell me….is it working for you?
